Best of 2012 // Albums

Albums:          I actually had a tough time making this list.  A lot of things were good in 2012, not just albums.  But anyways, here’s my whack at the list.  I’m working on finishing the top songs list, which is way harder.

  1. Frank Ocean // channel ORANGE
Obviously this was the standout album of the year, as R&B has been making a revival this year.  You’ve probably seen this in the top 3 places for many other top album lists; it is where it should be.  I think this is one of the rare moments where an album of such hype actually lived up to it.
  2. BadBadNotGood // BBNG 2
Maybe a surprise to some of you to see this all the way at the #2 spot, but what this teenage jazz-trio has done in the past two years has been incredible.  From collaborating with Tyler, the Creator, to covering TNGHT, to somehow making a Soulja Boy song good: these guys are living the life.  One glance at the songs they cover, and you can see why they’ve been considered “genre-breakers”. I had the good opportunity of seeing them live earlier this year in Milwaukee and it was pretty tight.  BBNG2 is one of the albums out there that I can jam all the way through, over and over, everyday.
  3. Flying Lotus // Until The Quiet Comes
There isn’t anything out there that Flying Lotus can’t do anymore.  I hope that him revealing his Captain Murphy identity didn’t distract any of you from this album.  But Duality still found itself on this list.
  4. Flume // Flume
  5. Clams Casino // Instrumentals 2
  6. Kendrick Lamar // good kid, m.A.A.d city
  8. Supreme Cuts & Haleek Maul // Chrome Lips
  9. Captain Murphy // Duality
  10. The xx // Coexist

Best of 2012 // EPs

EPs:              With so many to choose from, here’s my favorite EPs of the year.  It was really tough to narrow it down, especially since I’m doing a separate list for full albums. Check out the top 10 below and comment if you have anything to add; I wanna hear what you guys think, too.

  1. Cashmere Cat // Mirror Maru EP
  2. Disclosure // The Face EP
  4. AlunaGeorge // You Know You Like It
  5. Equator Club // Healing EP
  6. Maths Time Joy // Lightyears EP
  7. Druid Cloak // The Grove
  8. Husky // Transition One EP
  9. Capeface // Burning Books EP
  10. Polkadot // Don’t Pigeonhole Anything EP

Best of 2012 // Blogs

  1. Live for the Funk

LFTF really had themselves a good year; they completely changed up the look of the blog (which it’s probably the best looking one out there) and also began to release music themselves.  Just basically a solid fucking blog.
Always been one of my favourites; self-explanatory.  Make sure you check out their to-watch list for 2013.
  3. Eton Messy
Sure it’s a Youtube account, but I get a shit ton of music from there.  EM is probably the best Youtube publication, and should have a good year in 2013 as they will begin to do some club nights and I will get an EM shirt once they print them off early next year.  For those who are into the post-dubstep scene, subscribe to Eton Messy.
  4. Fhinq Music554226_538627949487567_155637050_nAnother Youtube account, Fhinq has really grown on me lately.  The UK publication sounds like it has bigger plans for 2013, and is about to release some exclusive music itself soon, similar to LFTF‘s label-type business.
  5. Life Crushed
  6. Pitchfork
You might hate them, but one can’t deny P4K’s productivity.  I have to be honest and say that I get a lot of music news through P4K on twitter; they always seem to be posting stuff the moment it happens, whether it’s tour dates, songs, or just general music news.
  7. XLR8R
  8. Keep On Repeat
